Maxims and Instructions for the Boiler Room was written by mechanical engineer Nehemiah Hawkins as a practical handbook for engineers, firemen, and mechanics responsible for steam equipment. Originally published in 1898, it covers the everyday knowledge required to operate and maintain a boiler room.
Hawkins discusses the construction, setting, control, and management of several types of steam boilers. The book also addresses steam pumps, heating systems, practical plumbing, safety valves, boiler strength, pump capacity, combustion, fuel economy, and routine maintenance.
The term “maxims” refers to the short rules and principles Hawkins used to communicate practical lessons. These instructions helped operators recognize unsafe conditions, maintain proper water levels and steam pressure, manage fires, and respond to equipment problems.
